Summer is boating season—and the last thing you want is engine trouble or safety issues when you’re out enjoying the sun. Whether you're cruising the coast, tubing with the family, or fishing all day, your boat needs to be in peak condition.

Here’s how to make sure your boat is fully summer-ready—with tips for engine care, safety checks, and more.

1. Start with the Engine

Your engine is the most important part of your boat. Don’t wait for problems to show up halfway through summer. Here’s what to inspect:

  • Oil change – Swap out old oil and filters.

  • Fuel system check – Look for worn hoses or leaks.

  • Cooling system – Ensure the water pump and impeller are working properly.

  • Battery – Charge and test it, clean the terminals, and check for corrosion.

Thinking about an upgrade? At Eagle Engine Sales, we offer top-quality remanufactured marine engines—an affordable, reliable way to boost your boat’s performance.

2. Propeller & Lower Unit Care

Before launching:

  • Inspect your propeller for dings, chips, or bent blades.

  • Remove any fishing line from the shaft.

  • Change the gear lube in the lower unit (especially if it’s milky or smells burnt).

A clean and damage-free prop means smoother rides and better fuel efficiency.

3. Electrical & Safety Systems

Your safety on the water depends on working electronics and emergency gear. Make sure to:

  • Test navigation lights, horn, and bilge pump.

  • Check the radio and GPS.

  • Ensure fire extinguishers are up to date.

  • Count and inspect life jackets for wear and proper sizing.

Quick Tip: Pack extra fuses, spark plugs, and belts in your onboard tool kit.

4. Deep Clean & Protect

Saltwater and sun can wear down your boat fast. Here’s how to protect it:

  • Wash and wax the hull.

  • Use UV-protectant spray on vinyl seating.

  • Clean compartments and remove moisture to prevent mold.

It’ll look great and last longer too!

5. Stock Up on Spare Parts

Don’t get stuck mid-season. Keep these boat parts on hand:

  • Fuel filters

  • Spark plugs

  • Oil stabilizer

  • Hoses and clamps
